Hungry coyotes assembled outside the adobe home, scratching to come inside. Ultima's owl pounced on the coyotes and dug its claws into the animal flesh. Ultima formed three molded dolls from the clay. She let wax from the lit candle drip over them so they took on the color of flesh. Then she let them cool. She held the clay dolls close to Lucas's mouth and breathed on them. They came to life and seemed squirm. She pierced each doll with a pin. Later, after Lucas drank the rest of Ultima's remedy, he vomited a huge ball of hair. It fell to the floor and wiggled like a live snake. Ultima would burn this later, by the tree where the witches danced.
