The funeral procession carried the woven coffin of the rotting corpse of his daughter. It rested on the floor of a wagon pulled by mules. Tenorio led the way dressed in black and wearing an eye patch over the empty socket. All eyes were on the priest at the church entrance. He had barred the door with his arms and gestures for Tenorio to leave the church premises. Tenorio and his daughters were shamed that the Trementina daughter would have to be buried in unsanctioned ground. The wagon turned and passed back over the same stretch of dusty road, and when Tenorio saw Ultima in the throng of mourners gathered along the way, he glared. He vowed revenge.
