When Skimpole cheats Richard out of money, Mr. Jarndyce reimburses Richard for what he has lost. However, Richard sees the reimbursement as extra money that he did not expect, since he never expected to see tht money again. Thus, he views the reimbursement as a windfall, and decided to spend most of it carelessly and the small amount left he will save.
