Although the world needs philanthropists, generosity primarily starts at home. Mrs. Jellyby is extremely selfish when it comes to giving her daughter any of her time, affection or any other kind of energy. She is so focused on her "good" works in other countries that she has entirely ignored her most important duties, including that of being a parent. Her children are neglected in every way and are generally a nuisance for her.
