What is the theme in The Minds of Billy Milligan by Daniel Keyes?

One major theme in the novel is that of multiple personalities, specifically, Billy's split personalities. Billy has a total nineteen personalities that take over at various points in time. Over the course of the novel, Billy tries to merge these personalities into one, thus, fighting to gain her own identity.
