Who is Captain Samuel Adams from Beyond the Hundredth Meridian: John Wesley Powell and the Second Opening of the West and what is their importance?

Captain Samuel Adams was an amateur explorer and scientist. He did not, however, adhere to the necessity of factual reporting as well as Major Powell. Adams proclaimed himself a member of Powell's expedition, but he was actually put off the boat. Afterward, he used his myths to form his own expedition, which did not fare well either, and he spent most of his life trying to get the government to pay him for what he had not accomplished. Adams is presented as a foil for Powell.
