How does the author use foreshadowing in Beware of Pity?

In the novel's introduction, Hofmiller has several thoughts related to how his actions appear to others, foreshadowing his obsession with such concepts later in the novel. It is clear he is not a mean man in this sense, but instead is simply a trained man whose entire upbringing and military background force him to constantly think of how he appears to others.
