What is the theme in Belle Prater's Boy by Ruth White?

One of the major themes in the novel is that of friendship, specifically, the friendship that develops between Gypsy and Woodrow. Initially, we see a barrier of status between these two character, which dissipates as they become acquainted and find how much they have in common.
