Christine has an inability to retain memories for longer than a twenty-four hour period. This problem stems from some sort of injury Christine suffered eighteen years prior to the beginning of the novel. For some reason, Christine can make and retain memories while conscious, but when she enters deep sleep all these memories are lost.
