Why did Miss Franny's great-grandfather open a candy factory?

In Chapter 17, we learn that Littmus cried about the loss of his family and home, after which, he had a yearning for a piece of candy. Since he hadn't had candy in a very long time, he decided that was what he would do for a profession. So he started a candy factory.
