Describe symbolism in Batman: The Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller

One important symbol in the novel is Bruce Wayne's beard. He grows the beard at a point where the bat suit has been put away... when he shaves the beard off it serves as a symbol of his tranformation.... Batman is back.
