Who are the men who arrived earlier? Where are they at this point in the story?

The two men had knocked on her door earlier, desperate but not dangerous. They'd introduced themselves and said that they'd come from Caltech. The man are seismologists and they study earthquakes. Then the cops had arrived so she told the men to go up to the roof.
