What does Forster mean when he says that novels give us the "illusion of perspicacity"?

People in novels can have eternal love or eternal life. They can go without food or gorge themselves daily. The novelist creates a world with characters that aren't real in that they do not have to be bound by the normal experiences of life and all their secrets can be revealed.
