In Forster's opinion, a novel by Jane Austen is more complicated than a novel like The Amorous Adventures of Moll Flanders because the characters are interconnected, causing complications to the plot. This inter-dependence of characters in an Austen novel makes for a closely knit fabric that needs each thread to stay whole.
