Why does the bloody spectacle not humor the Romans?

The sages died with dignity. The Romans were not expecting the sages to react this way. It appears that the Romans would have been more entertained if the sages had begged for their lives, or perhaps lessened themselves in some way that would give the Romans a sense of victory during their executions.
