Why does Charicles say that mathematics and science could also be myths?

Charicles presents Elisha with the idea that the mathematical works of Euclid were never proven correct beyond doubt. This idea deeply affects Elisha because his life has been devoted so completely to the pursuit of truth and knowledge based on mathematics. Upon discovering this way of thinking, Elisha has feelings of failure, thinking that his life's work has been in vain.
