Why do the rabbis have to meet in secret in the attic?

With Romans at war with Jews, Jewish traditions and teachings have been outlawed. Anyone who is found practicing Jewish traditions or teachings is executed. The Rabbis continue to have these secret meetings in order to keep the faith alive under heavy Roman oppression.
