Why do Elisha and Manto hide their mutual love from Rufus, Manto's benefactor?

Elisha and Manto hide their love for several reasons. Manto does not wish to leave the lifestyle she has become accustomed to. She would not be so wealthy without Rufus. Also, Rufus would be very angry, and this means potential danger for Elisha. Rufus may very well have him killed. There is no clear solution for this problem for Elisha. Apart, they each are able to live the lives they wish to. Together, they risk losing all they have worked for in their lives.
