Why did the merchant's business suffer after taking his case to the Roman courts?

Because the merchant did not listen to the Jewish law, the Jewish people felt betrayed. The people do not like to be reminded of their Roman rulers, and do not like it when the decisions of their court are overturned. The merchant lost the support of the community and went bankrupt.
