Addie is reminded of her sin of adultery every time she sees Jewel. Addie has lived with Anse and her family for a long time, and has done a lot of hard work. but she “know[s her] own sin”. Addie accepts the consequences of her sin, and know that she “deserves [her] punishment”. She “begrudge[s]” her sins, but does not think she needs grace in her life. Addie realizes that she must take all responsibility for her actions. She must forgive herself instead of asking forgiveness from God.
