Who is Captain Winterbottom?

Winterbottom is the white Englishman in charge of governing the area of Nigeria that includes the territories of both the Okperi and Umuaro. He is sickly and not very productive, judgmental and opinionated. He makes what he sees as a favorable political and cultural alliance with Ezeulu, but is unable to follow through when he becomes ill.
