On several occasions throughout the narrative, rain represents the power of nature to cleanse people and communities of strain, tension, and conflict. At times, rain creates mud, which represents difficulties and challenges that the characters have moved through, or are in the process of moving through. Rain also represents the life-giving properties of nature, affirming the power of nature and its role in sustaining life.
