How does the author use foreshadowing in Blue Adept?

In Chapter Seven, Sheen takes Stile to a machine that reveals his enemy is a serf. The machine also reveals that Sheen was sent by a Citizen in order to watch over and protect Stile, foreshadowing that something may happen to her.
