What do books represent in the novel, Apollo?

The books Okenwa's parents read during his childhood symbolize detachment. Throughout his upbringing, Okenwa was never interested in reading the way his parents were. Books allowed them to detach from reality into the world of ideas. Their books also kept them distracted from Okenwa's emotional needs.
