Who is Aunt Carol from Anywhere but Here and what is their importance?

Aunt Carol is an interesting character. As a young woman, she was one of the few women who volunteered in WW2. She has a romantic history with a soldier in the French resistance. Aunt Carol returns to the Bay City but must contend with cancer as well as her wayward sister.
