At the beginning he is her nemesis because he calls her carrot and she becomes so enraged that she smashes the small writing tablet over his head. Later, however, when Anne has to give up her dream of education and decides to stay in Glen St. Mary to care for Marilla, Gilbert gives up his position as a teacher in the town so that Anne can have the job. He impacts her in that he allows her a means and a way for carrying out her heart's desires. This self sacrifice eventually becomes love between both of them.
