There is a great deal of truth in what he says. The dutch were upset that they were invaded. During World War I they had been overlooked and left alone. They had, in error, assumed that the same thing would happen during WWII. They had very little military might and so Holland fell in about 3 days. However, resistance continued in an underground fashion. In Mr. Kraler's case, he loves the Frank family and views them as if they were his own family. He doesn't want them feeling badly having to depend on him.
