This novel is told from two different points of view. The majority of the story is told from the first-person point of view of Mireille. Using Mireille’s point of view to describe her experiences while being held in captivity as well as her recovery is the only way that Gay could have told this story completely.

There are several chapters — Chapters 4, 14, 20, 27, 32, and 39 — that are written from the point of view of a third-person narrator. The focus is generally on Michael, but other characters, like Sebastian and Fabienne, are also featured. These chapters let the reader know not only what Mireille is experiencing during her kidnapping, but also what her family members are doing and thinking during this period.
