How did Posy damage her mother's reputation after Sophie's arrest in the novel, An Offer from a Gentleman?

After Araminta had Sophie arrested for stealing, Posy told authorities that her mother’s wedding ring was at home in the jewelry box and that she, herself, had taken the shoe clips. She further embarrassed her mother when she announced that Sophie had a dowry, but Araminta had never given it to her.
