There were many tell tale clues that suggested that not all was as Farquhar perceived them to be. One such example is how long it takes him to fall into the water and other other sort of 'out of body' experiences. He also jumps from one experience to the next, like seeing his wife running to him, all young again. Then there are the whispers in the dark and the run through the forest.
