In "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" how does irony reinforce the theme that death cannot be outrun?

In context, the reader is led to believe, as is the protagonist, that death can been outrun. In an ironic twist, however, all of the action that takes place after the board is dropped is the time between life and death on the end of a rope.
