How does the author use foreshadowing in An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge?

Peyton Farquhar's (main character) language foreshadows what we find out is actually happening to him. When we think the man is in the water, the language foreshadows his hanging, "A rising sheet of water... stangled him."
