Describe symbolism in An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge by Ambrose Bierce

Driftwood is a symbol in the story. We see it a few times. It drifts downriver representing the freedom that eludes Farquharas. The driftwood then becomes an extension of Farquhar himself as he imagines his escape downriver in the moments before his execution.
