What political reason is there for Gabriel to remain in the hospital?

Gabriel remains in the hospital primarily for political reasons. Gabriel uses dirt to keep his leg wound infected in order to remain in the hospital. Earlier a senior officer had instructed Gabriel to try to remain in the hospital as long as possible. The hospital allows Gabriel to overhear conversations and steal supplies for the other prisoners.
