In Part One, Chapter Four, Felix is at an awkward stage between adolescents and adulthood. He is disappointed that he is no longer his brothers best man. When smoking, the other family members question whether or not he is old enough to smoke. When his father inspects the hands of the children, he includes Felix which infuriates Felix.
