An African Elegy
Consider the context of the stanza:
We are the miracles that God made
To taste the bitter fruit of Time.
We are precious.
And one day our suffering
Will turn into the wonders of the earth.
I think the speaker suggests that we are children of God and are precious because of that. Precious things are impermenant and humans are impermenant.
