Why does Sarat go into Emerald Creek?

Sarat does not want to look weak and refuse a dare. She also wants to earn money. First, she retrieves an antique watch that has drifted onto a rock in the middle of the creek. Then, when offered a dare to step in, she cannot refuse because she would look weak. She steps in, loses her footing and goes under into the filth.
