Why does Benjamin climb on the roof of greenhouse before he breaks his arm?

Benjamin climbs on the roof of greenhouse #36 because he has seen Sarat going in and out of there with her diaries and wants to know what she is doing. Unfortunately, when he climbs on the roof, he is startled by the lights from the guardhouse, falls off the ladder, and breaks his arm.
