What is the reaction Gaines has after he catches up with Sarat after the massacre at Camp Patience?

When Sarat tells Gaines that she wants to kill everybody that killed her mother and her brother, Gaines smiles. Sarat does not see it, but the smile indicates that Gaines has achieved what he wanted to achieve in recruiting Sarat to the rebel cause.
