Sarat observes a young Northern soldier in a tower through the eye of her rifle. She thinks about his motivations for being a soldier and shoots him. The narrator explains the aftermath of the massacre, when the Chestnut children were given the house “as blood money” (188): as survivors of the massacre, they became popular among Southerners, but Sarat remained unmoved by public bereavement.
