When Jawad Sahib and Nasreen Baji send Amal to the Khans’ brightly colored literacy center, they do so in the hopes that Amal’s presence at the center will encourage attendance among other villagers, thereby advancing Khan Sahib’s political career. At the center, Amal meets a teacher named Asif, who helps her use a computer, lends her books for Fatima, and acts as her confidant when Amal learns about Jawad’s murder of the diplomat’s son. For Amal, the center represents hope and fills her with dreams for a brighter future.
