What is the importance of the Khan Estate in the novel, Amal Unbound?

When Jawad Sahib demands that Amal repay her debt for disrespecting him by serving in his household, the luxurious Khan estate becomes the novel’s new primary setting. Tall gates and bushes surround the estate, equating it to a prison. The estate includes barren servants’ quarters that Amal avoids sleeping in as Nasreen Baji’s maidservant. Jawad Sahib’s office contains shelves of books he never reads and a filing cabinet detailing each of the debts owed to him. At Jawad’s estate, the servants must dine from metal dishware and in a different room than the Khans. Jawad’s men dispose of the diplomat’s son’s body on the Khan estate, leading to Jawad’s arrest near the novel’s conclusion.
