Why does Dolly go out of her way to help Socrates in the novel, Always Outnumbered, Always Outgunned?

Dolly, the young veterinarian who cares for Bruno – the black dog Socrates saves – puts up her house to pay Socrates’ bond. She helps Socrates because he helped Bruno. Though she only knows him briefly, she sees a goodness in Socrates he does not see in himself.
