Why is Ethan initially antagonistic toward Althea in the novel, Althea & Oliver?

Ethan is one of the housemates in Brooklyn who helps Matilda with the Bread and Roses work. He is antagonistic toward Althea at first because he suspiciously thinks she is a rich kid who will run home when she gets tired of the lifestyle led by those in the Brooklyn house.
