Charlie's uncle Glen is a symbol of ambition and wealth that Charlie has internalized since childhood. Charlie's father was an accountant, but his uncle was the manager of a steel processing plant, and when Charlie observed how the other members of the family respected and deferred to Uncle Glen, he aspired to this same level of success. The fact that Charlie is only a mid-level employee at his investment firm is a source of shame and dissatisfaction in his life.
