Why does Maddie spend so much time in the library in the novel, Alone?

Maddie spends a lot of time at the library looking for books to help her survive in the strange new world she finds herself in. She finds books across all topics and subjects, including camping and firearms. Maddie is in awe of the vastness of the library and the knowledge that she could acquire.
