The lake is a place where Maddie feels comfortable relaxing with George and enjoying the wildlife. She finds comfort in the way the animals move through the day, unhurried, in contrast with the way her own life has veered dramatically off course. The lake is also the first time in the novel that Maddie explores her relationship with religion and what higher power might be watching out for her safety.
