The novel is written in free verse and Maddie is a voracious reader who seeks out the library despite the larger crisis as reading aids her in understanding and expressing her muddled emotions. Maddie finds a feeling of comfort and community in seeing her story from a bird's eye view as highlighted through her language choices rather than continuously feeling her loneliness and being reminded of all she has lost.

Most verses in the book flow together easily which ultimately lends the individual scenes and jumps in narration a meaning that is unusually coherent for this style of writing: the reader does not need to cobble information together to figure out what is going on just like Maddie as she learns how to navigate the world on her own terms.
