How does Maddie use memories to help her survive in the novel, Alone?

Maddie's grandparents live in her imagination throughout the novel. When she is hurt, emotionally or physically, she remembers the way they took care of her as a child and made her feel safe. She feels their presence vividly in her most difficult moments.
