Painting symbolizes failed communication. Alma enjoys painting, and she even paints a portrait of Yunior. Yunior comments in narration that she lacks skill in the discipline, but he implicitly does not say this to Alma. Both the crude nature of her paintings and Yunior’s reticence about them indirectly represent forms of failed communication.
